Eagles Injury Update for Thursday

26 December 2019 Philadelphia Eagles

The Eagles have been hammered by injuries all season long. With the IR numbers growing at a rapid pace, Eagles fans have to be fearful of the injury report, every single day. The coaching staff and medical staff have all been questioned but no matter who is at fault, the young guys have been stepping in, regardless. We may need to rely on some depth a little more on Sunday. This week, we see two superstars still dealing with their injuries and another star that should be coming back from his.

According to Eagles beat writer Tim McManus, Zach Ertz will not be practicing today. He is still dealing with a rib injury that he sustained against the Cowboys. Coach Pederson said they would bang him around a little but it doesn’t sound too promising, that he will be ready for Sunday.

In the case that Ertz isn’t ready for Sunday, the Eagles brought back TE Richard Rodgers. Someone who is familiar with the system and can be plugged in right away. Rodgers and the Eagles reached an injury settlement on September 11th of this year and he was released. It seems he is fully recovered from his injury and ready to produce. He will be called upon to back-up TEs Dallas Goedert and Josh Perkins, in the even Ertz is out.

Lane Johnson will be limited at practice today, according to Dave Zangaro of NBC Sports. He has been dealing with an ankle injury that has kept him out the last two weeks. Coach Pederson wants to see where he is at but says he is trending in the right direction. He is questionable for this Sunday against the Giants.

If Johnson is out, the Eagles will once again rely on Halapoulivaati Vaitai to start at Right Tackle. He did a great job against the Cowboys, only allowing one pressure. Dallas has a very formidable line, so the kid has definitely been stepping it up.

Nelson Agholor missed practice again and doesn’t seem to be getting any positive news. He has been dealing with a nagging knee injury since Week 6 against the Vikings. It was brought to light when he was sidelined in the Week 14 matchup with the Giants. Some people tried to say it was fake but clearly it’s not, as his knee has swollen twice in size.

With Agholor, Jeffery and Jackson out, the Eagles have been relying on J.J. Arcega-Whiteside, Greg Ward and Rob Davis as their starting WRs.

The Eagles also just signed WR Deontay Burnett off of their practice squad, so all signs are pointing to Agholor not suiting up this Sunday.

Now, let’s get to the good news! According to Eagles beat writer Ed Kracz, Jordan Howard is expected to be cleared for contact, later today. He has been out since hurting his shoulder in Week 9 against his former team, the Bears.

In his absence, the Eagles have seen a huge boost in the running game. That’s not to say Howard wasn’t producing. I feel it’s more of the coaching staff not utilizing him, when he was actually healthy.

It seemed to be a blessing in disguise because now the Eagles are running the ball well and have found two RBs ready to carry the load. Miles Sanders and Boston Scott have been phenomenal in his absence and even with Howard returning, they should still see a bulk of the snaps. Not just due to Howard coming back from the shoulder injury but also because of how well they have played.

A few others were also limited in practice today but are not expected to miss any time, according to Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer. Those players were J.J. Arcega-Whiteside (foot), Jalen Mills (ankle) and Fletcher Cox (triceps).
