29 Days Until Kickoff

10 August 2019 Eagles News

The countdown to opening day is here as there’s just 29 days until the Philadelphia Eagles hit the field. Yesterday, on day 30, we profiled third year running back Corey Clement. On day 29, it’s all about Avonte Maddox.

Maddox is a second year cornerback ready to breakout for the Eagles. He’s got all the intangibles to succeed at this level and he already has a proven track record.

Coming into the NFL as a fourth round pick out of the University of Pittsburgh. As a Panther, Maddox was a very accomplished cornerback. He should all the NFL teams who could play in the Senior Bowl and that’s where the Eagles saw his talent on display.

During his rookie season, Maddox was displayed his diversity in playing multiple positions. The Eagles secondary was ravaged by injuries in the secondary and Maddox was moved to safety for a few games. However this season, his sole focus will be cornerback and he’ll be lock down.

Even with all of the moving around last season Maddox still has a great year. He had 35 tackles and two interceptions. But, it was the coverage what put him above the rest. The one play that stands out is against the Houston Texans. Maddox was step for step with DeAndre Hopkins who’s arguably the best wide receiver in football.

He gave the Eagles a lot to be excited for last season, so going into this one, there’s nothing to be concerned with, Maddox will thrive. His fluidity and ability to change directions sets him apart from the rest of the cornerbacks in his position. A great example of that happened just a few days ago against the Tennessee Titans.

Last season was a learning experience for Maddox and he took full advantage of it. The Eagles have every reason to be excited for Maddox. Whether he’s in the slot or outside, Maddox is going to be the best cornerback on the Eagles roster. No one would have imagined he’d be this good when the Eagles drafted him, but luckily for them, this pick was definitely worth it.
