Jeffery Simmons Should Be The Pick at #25

25 April 2019 NFL News & Updates Opinion

The day has finally arrived, today is the 2019 NFL draft. The Philadelphia Eagles will pick at the 25 spot tonight. The Eagles did a great job this off season at addressing the holes on their roster. Desean Jackson provides a deep threat this team was desperately missing last season, and Malik Jackson comes in and fills the #2 defensive tackle position.

The Eagles still have some glaring holes on the roster, as Safety, Offensive line and Defensive line help are all positions of need for this team. There is a certain player in this draft that if he’s there that they should definitely take, and his name is Jeffery Simmons.

The 6’4 301 pound Defensive Lineman out of Mississippi State is an absolute freak of a player. When you watch him on tape you can see how dominate he really is. He had a slight drop in production from his stellar 2017 season, however he still had 17 tackles for loss last season, which is impressive.

I believe he is the 3rd best defensive tackle in the draft behind Ed Oliver and Quinnen Williams, but he is right there with them. His 300 pound frame makes him almost unblockable with his freak athleticism. His ability to get under lineman while pass rushing is something I haven’t seen before from a 6’4 300 pound linemen.

Jeffery Simmons has a rare combination of power and speed that does not come around often. So why would he be there at #25? Well for one he has some character issues. He was arrested in 2016 and charged with malicious mischief from a fight he had with a woman, and a video of the fight surfaced online.

The big reason he might fall to 25 is because he tore his ACL in February while training. There is a 99% chance that Simmons won’t play at all in 2019, and that could be in the Eagles favor. It sounds crazy, but hear me out. The Eagles just signed Timmy Jernigan to a 1 year contract today, and can fill the #3 defensive tackle spot perfectly. That gives the chance for Jeffery Simmons to rehab from an injury that majority of players nowadays come back and are just fine.

The Eagles can afford to draft Simmons and have him red shirt the first year, if they draft well in the later rounds. I am not a big fan of drafting injured players and have them red shirt, however I can make an exception for Simmons. He is a game changer and pairing him beside Fletcher Cox for years to come should get Eagles fans fired up. If Simmons is there at 25, he should be the pick.
