Rise or fall: Five Eagles players who need to perform tonight vs. Patriots

16 August 2018 Eagles News

The Philadelphia Eagles will have deju vu today as they travel to New England to face the Patriots. Obviously the Eagles we’re victorious on that occasion, making them the reigning World Champions.

However, today the the scenario is different. With roster cuts looming, some players are playing for their spot on the team. With that being said, here are five players worth watching tonight.

  1. Josh Adams

The rookie running back ran six times for 30 yards last week versus the Pittsburgh Steelers. He showed flashes of brilliance, but not enough to secure his spot on the roster. In one of the Eagles’ most competitive roster battles, Adams needs another strong performance today.

  1. Avonte Maddox

Another rookie with a ton of potential. The Eagles lost cornerback Patrick Robinson to free agency and immediately a player mentioned to fill that role was second year cornerback Sidney Jones. However, after drafting Maddox, the Eagles threw everyone a curve ball. He’s a player that has immense speed and quickness, his ability suits the slot. He’s a much better fit in the slot and as of late, he’s been getting those reps with the first team. Against a team like the Patriots who like to work out of the slot a lot, it’s going to be a big test for Maddox.

  1. Kamu Grugier-Hill

As training camp nears its end, there’s still not a clear cut favorite to be the Eagles starting linebacker in replace of Mychal Kendricks. Last game, Grugier-Hill led the team and tackles and was flying around making plays. Against his former team, expect much of the same. These strong outings are what is going to help Grugier-Hill lock up the starting job.

  1. Jordan Mailata

Last week was his first ever football game. He was a little rough, but what do you expect from a guy playing his first ever football game not just in the NFL but ever. Tonight’s opportunity for him to play and learn from his last outing. He’s a fun player to watch and he’s definitely going to be a fun one to watch again today.

  1. Shelton Gibson

The wide receiver had an electric touchdown last week versus the Steelers. He showed the team his deep threat ability beating the opposing cornerback right off the line and securing the catch. He’s been impressive all camp and looked really impressive in the first game. For him, building off that performance is important and in a battle for a roster spot, doing so is necessary.
