Eagles: Three things to watch for vs. Dolphins

24 August 2017 Eagles News

Tonight our Philadelphia Eagles take on the Miami Dolphins in the final season tune-up. Yes, the starters will play most of the first half, giving everyone a preview of what is to come this season.

Knowing that we will see the starters for more than just two drives, there are a lot of things to watch for tonight. Here are the three things I think you should pay close attention to.

1. Can the Eagles get the run game going?

All throughout the preseason and if you want to throw it in, last season, the Eagles have failed to get a consistent run game going. Particularly with the first team, the Eagles cannot get anything going. For example, last game versus the Buffalo Bills, LeGarrette Blount managed just eight yards on five carries. He was misused and could not get it going.

Tonight, it is important to see the Eagles get the run game going. But first, they need to use their running backs correctly. Blount is the power runner, Darren Sproles is the game of pace guy and either Wendell Smallwood or Corey Clement will get the rest of the carries. It seems simple on paper and it the fan’s perspective, however, the Eagles have struggled. Tonight, they need to rely on the run and show everyone they can establish it.

2. Derek Barnett

Barnett is rumored to be getting to start with the first team defense over Vinny Curry, so look for him to make a statement.

Barnett has been able to get three sacks in his first two games. However, it is not just the sacks that are impressive, everything about his game has been impressive. He has a great motor, he is constantly applying pressure and overall he looks to be a really good player. This is Barnett’s moment to convince the Eagles coaching staff he is their best option at the left defensive end position. Look for him to have a great game tonight.

3. Carson Wentz

Wentz has looked sharp all preseason, but today he will see a lot of action…so let’s see how he does. The Eagles gave him weapons, he has tight ends to throw to and the offensive line is healthy and good to go. Watch for Wentz to put on a clinic versus the Dolphins.

There is no doubt with Wentz’s ability, but you do want to see him and the offense just unleash…. I mean what a way to go into the season. He is the future of the Eagles and hopefully tonight we will see a very good preview of what is to come.
