Even with the recent roster move, the Eagles still have a few option in the slot

30 August 2017 Eagles News

Today, the Eagles released cornerback Ron Brooks, the same player who started every game in the slot last season for the Eagles.

With that being said, a couple of days ago, head coach Doug Pederson said a position battle to watch going into Thursday’s game versus the New York Jets is the slot cornerback battle.  However, with this latest move, it seems like the Eagles have figured out which direction they want to go in ahead of time. The players are there, however, it is at the point where they need to figure out how to distribute the snaps amongst them.

Even with this trade, the Eagles have a couple of options at the position. The favorite to get most of the snaps in the slot is Patrick Robinson. Robinson is a much more natural fit in the slot. Before the Eagles traded for Ronald Darby, Robinson was forced to play outside, a position that did not suit him. His best years in the league came in the slot and that is where he will be playing this season.

Other than that, the Eagles can also use Aaron Grymes, Corey Graham and even Malcolm Jenkins in the slot. Jenkins is much better at safety, however, the Eagles like to use a package which allows him to move into the slot and into the box. That is where the addition of Graham comes into play. The Eagles are comfortable playing Graham at safety, which would allow Jenkins to move into the slot if needed.

But, the more underrated player in this whole mix is newly acquired cornerback Dexter McDougle. Expect him to challenge for time in the slot, he was having a great camp with the New York Jets. This season he switched primarily to the slot and was thriving with the Jets.

Tomorrow, watch this position and see who steps up. Right now, this competition is up in the air, anyone can challenge for the snaps.
