Eagles Camp Preview: What to watch for as camp begins

27 July 2021 Eagles News

The Philadelphia Eagles are reporting to training camp today and tomorrow, the fun all begins. For the first time in three seasons there’s a lot of uncertainty going into this training camp. Let’s discuss all these things to watch for in this training camp.

First things first, all eyes are going to be on Jalen Hurts. The Eagles are being linked to trades for a quarterback before Hurts even gets a chance to play a full season. He has a lot to prove to the Eagles and sports media. A great training camp is going to quiet that noise.

One of the most important factors in this training though is without a doubt the transition the offense and the defense go through. What will Nick Sirianni’s offense look like and what will Jonathan Gannon’s defense look like?

Offensively, what kind of routes will we be seeing the Eagles offense run? This offense is going to be adding a lot more creativity and focus on spread and widening the field. A big focal point of the Indianapolis Colts offense was the utilization of their running backs in the passing game. The Eagles have a few running backs who can thrive in that role, let’s see who takes that role.

Defensively, who’s going to be the Eagles starting linebackers. We heard Gannon say he wants to generate a lot of turnovers. The Eagles haven’t been too good at that the last two seasons. With pretty much the squad, how’s he going to do that? It’s possible we see the Eagles use their strong side linebacker as a pass rusher.

Those are the two biggest things to watch as this camp starts and goes on. As for camp battle, it goes without saying Jordan Mailata vs. Andre Dillard is the one to watch. Mailata became a beast for the Eagles at left tackle last season. But, the Eagles drafted Dillard to be that guy. Those two are going to have to fight for that position.

Last but certainly not least, we get to watch DeVonta Smith. He’s one of the most fluid and natural pass catchers the Eagles have had in a while. Watching him and seeing him do what he can do in an Eagles uniform is going to be a treat.
