Free Agent Tracker: Eagles bolster their defensive line, add DT Javon Hargrave to a 3 year/ $39 million contract

The Philadelphia Eagles have made their first move of free agency.

The saying goes in football, you win in the trenches. This is a saying the Eagles know very well as they’ve demonstrated it over the past few seasons. To ensure they continue to dominate, they’ve bolstered their defensive line, bringing in Javon Hargrave from the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Hargrave signed to the Eagles on a three year deal worth $39 million with $26 million of that contract guaranteed. It’s about $13 million a year for a player who’s considered one of the best interior linemen in football.

At age 27, Hargrave has a lot of years ahead of him and for him, the best is still yet to come. With the Steelers, Hargrave was a force in the inside and he even became a good pass rusher from the defensive/nose tackle position. In the past two seasons, he recorded 6.5 sacks in 2018 and four more in 2019.

Adding him alongside Fletcher Cox is giving the Eagles a massive wall in their interior defensive line. And, they still have a guy by the name of Malik Jackson who they can move around if need be.

Although the Eagles need linebackers and cornerbacks, this is a great move. Your defense always plays better when your defensive line is hunting down the quarterback and controlling the run game.

Their defensive line is going to be formidable, but they still need to add to their roster. Stay tuned as more moves come in.
