Making the case for the Eagles to draft a safety

10 April 2019 Uncategorized

With the NFL draft upcoming, the Eagles can really go anywhere with their first round pick. With every option on the board, we’re here to make the pick for them and with that being said, the Eagles need to pick a safety.

Safety is one of the more important positions for the Eagles, they ask a lot of their safeties. Malcolm Jenkins is arguably the most important player on the defense as a whole.

Last season, the Eagles used a mix of Jenkins, Rodney McLeod, Tre Sullivan, Avonte Maddox and Corey Graham at safety. This offseason, the Eagles reworked McLeods contract, leaving his ultimate future unsettled and signed former Minnesota Vikings safety Andrew Sendejo to a one year deal. Although the safeties for this season seem set, the future is not.

That is partly the reason the Eagles need to select a safety now, but it’s also due to the fact that this class is loaded with great safeties. Where the Eagles pick in the second round, their is no saying the Eagles will have an opportunity at some of the top ones.

A few names to watch are Chauncey Gardner-Johnson, Johnathan Abram, Nasir Adderley, Juan Thornhill and Darnell Savage. All of these prospects are going to be selected in the first round and in the second round. The Eagles will have the opportunity to select one with their pick.

When it comes down to it, the Eagles need to select the most versatile player. Knowing Jenkins moves around, it’s nice to have a safety who can do more than just play safety. Whether he’s good in man coverage, zone coverage, good in the box and a big hitter, the Eagles need to focus on the guy who does more than just one thing very well.

Where safety is not a need for the Eagles, it’s definitely where they’ll find the most talent at their pick in the draft. Finding a safety for the future will be big for the Eagles and that can happen this draft.
