Eagles combine primer: What positions you need to be looking out for

28 February 2019 Uncategorized

The NFL combine is here and it is time for teams to really get a feel for the prospects they are looking to add to their team. It is the world’s biggest interview as prospects will strut their stuff not just on the field and in drills, but also in individual meetings.

For the Philadelphia Eagles, this year’s draft is extremely important because just last season, they were the best team in the NFL. They fell off just a little bit this season, but nonetheless, this draft gives them the opportunity to add a few quality starters, especially with three picks in the first two rounds.

When free agency comes, it has the potential to hit the Eagles hard. Ronald Darby, Tim Jernigan, Golden Tate, Nelson Agholor, Jay Ajayi, Brandon Graham, and Jordan Hicks are just a few names that could be departing the team. With that in mind, the Eagles are readily equipped to address those departures with the draft and that process starts at the combine.

The first positions you need to familiarize yourself with is defensive tackle and defensive end. Here’s what Eagles general manager Howie Roseman had to say about those positions earlier in the year.

“It’s clearly a very good defensive line group, probably a historical defensive line group, and that’s both at end and tackle.”

It is hard to say who’ll be there when the Eagles are picking, but right now, names being thrown around are Christian Wilkins, Dexter Lawrence, Jeffery Simmons, Montez Sweat, and Jachai Polite. If I were to bet, that is where the Eagles will go in terms of their first pick.

Another stacked position is running back and the Eagles are doing their homework. The Eagles have a formal meeting with just about every early-round prospect including Josh Jacobs, Devin Singleterry, Miles Sanders, and Bryce Love. The Eagles need to rejuvenate the run game and a running back could be in play for the Eagles early on, possibly in the second round with one of their picks. I say this because, without a third-round pick, running backs of this caliber will not be on the board with the exception of Love who’s coming off of an injury.

Lastly, wide receiver is definitely in the cards for the Eagles. With the possibility of losing both Tate and Agholor, the Eagles will need to address this position in the draft. Maybe not as early as the first two rounds, regardless, the Eagles will need to add talent at some point. If they do lose both, however, then an early wide receiver play is in the cards. Kelvin Harmon, Deebo Samuel, and Hakeem Butler are all names to watch here.

With the whole draft process just starting to get into the swing of things, those are the three positions to look out for as of now. The Eagles do have other needs like at linebacker and offensive line, but, as of now, those three positions seem to be getting a lot of attention. Enjoy the NFL combine and enjoy celebrating Bryce Harper signing with the Phillies!
