Game recap: Against more than just the Cowboys, the Eagles fall 29-23 in overtime

Well, that was garbage.

The Philadelphia Eagles fell in overtime to the Dallas Cowboys 29-23, in a game best summarized as demoralizing.

After a very underwhelming first half, the Eagles only trailed the Cowboys 6-0, after Cowboys kicker Brett Maher hit a 62 yard field goal.

The Eagles looked much better in the second half as Alshon Jeffery cut the led to three after his two yard touchdown reception. The Eagles forced a turnover which put them in good field position. Kicker Jake Elliott missed the extra point on the play.

Cowboys wide out Amari Cooper answered with a 28 yard touchdown shortly after. Then, the Eagles answered back with a touchdown by tight end Dallas Goedert. Then on the next play, Cooper caught a 75 yard touchdown to take back the lead. Wentz led the Eagles on a nice drive and capped it off with a six yard touchdown to Darren Sproles.

At the end of regulation, the Eagles forced the Cowboys out of field goal range and sent the game to overtime. All game the defense held up with the exception of a few big plays. In overtime, the Cowboys took advantage of the tired defense and won the game. The ball bounced off Rasul Douglas’ hands right into Coopers’ hands, a terrible way to lose the game.

But with that being said, the Eagles had all the opportunity to win this game. A terrible call to start the game cost them big. Apparently there was no clear recovery which makes NO sense. That would have changed the whole game.

There was a bunch of terrible refereeing decisions but the Eagles got the bulk of the bad ones. They also had a huge Dallas Goedert touchdown overturned and we’re still wondering what was called.

Offensively, the Eagles started off slow and it killed them. Even though Josh Adams ran effective early on, he finished with just 36 rushing yards. Another slow start killed them and they were forced to chase the game.

Defnesively, they played their hearts out. Injured and with a make shift defense, they were great. They forced turnovers and with the exception of a couple big plays they were good. Being on the field for over 2/3 of the game is the cause for the big statistics against them.

In the end, the Eagles were out-gained 576 to 256 and our possessed 45 to 23 minutes, but the game seems to have been stolen from the Eagles. Wentz threw for 228 yards and three touchdowns, with Alshon Jeffery being his best target catching six passes for 50 yards and one touchdown. With a loss today, the Eagles fall to 6-7 and have a tough matchup versus the Los Angeles Rams due next week. The race for the NFC East is over, but the Eagles can still make the playoffs.
