Preview: Coming off a win, the Eagles need to carry the momentum into this weeks clash vs. Panthers

15 October 2018 Eagles News

Trending upwards, the Eagles need to carry the momentum from last Thursday’s convincing win over the New York Giants into this weeks clash versus the Carolina Panthers.

The Eagles take on a Panthers team who just lost to a familiar foe in the Washington Redskins. The Panthers aren’t having the best season, but are struggling.

The Redskins used their two tight ends, Jordan Reed and Vernon Davis, to elevate the offense and pick up key third downs. They also had a good day running the football versus the Panthers. All in all, the Panthers have struggled to defend tight ends this season allowing 297 yards and three touchdowns to opposing tight ends, which is the seventh worst in the league.

The winning formula is there for the Eagles and the matchup bolds well in their favor, especially offensively. The Eagles can use Zach Ertz and Dallas Goedert at will. The run game has been heating up for the Eagles, and they will get a big boost with Darren Sproles likely coming back.

Defensively, the Eagles will have their hands filled with Christian McCaffrey. After just giving up nine catches for 99 yards to Saquon Barkley, the Eagles are facing another similar running back in McCaffrey. The Eagles’ linebackers need to track him at all time. It is possible the Eagles deploy Malcolm Jenkins on McCaffrey especially if Corey Graham is healthy as well.

Other than that, Panthers quarterback Cam Newton is dangerous especially with his feet. The Eagles defense is use to seeing a mobile quarterback because they see it on the practice field, but it’s something to keep an eye on as well.

When it’s all said and done, the Eagles seem to be heating up as the Panthers seem to be cooling down. It’s an important game for the Eagles because like last season, a mid season momentum run could pay big dividends down the road.
