One to watch: Eagles CB De’Vante Bausby

7 June 2018 Eagles News

A lot of the times, players break out during training camp. For the Philadelphia Eagles, one candidate to break out during training camp is cornerback De’Vante Bausby.

Breaking out during training camp is an understatement as Bausby has already had a very good spring with the team. He’s been very active during the team’s OTAs and he’s really looking like he’s set to be a contributor this season.

He’s a bigger frame cornerback standing 6’1” and weighing 190 pounds. With his length and ball skill, he’s able to  make a lot of plays on the ball. Although he’s last taste of game action was in 2016 with the Chicago Bears, the Eagles and defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz feel he could have played for them last season. Meeting with the media before one of the Eagles’ OTA sessions, Schwartz had this to say about Bausby.

“He was ready to play for us last year if need be,” Schwartz said. “He did a great job not just on the practice field, but in the meeting room, being up on the game plan. We were fortunate that we didn’t have so many injuries there that he needed to go, but he was ready, and he had the confidence of the coaching staff.

After the departure of breakout cornerback Patrick Robinson, there’s a hole in the Eagles secondary. The player to watch when looking for someone to fill that hole is Bausby. He’s been getting looks there and even though it is early on, that fact he’s getting a chance there is telling.

With his size, ball skill and speed, he’s be a pretty good option in the slot. However, he’s also a player who can be moved around which makes him even more valuable. One telling sign for him is he’s comfort level with the team and what they are doing. He fits in with the secondary and is bought in 120%. And, the reason that’s so important is because you do not want a cornerback who’s a poor communicator on the field.

With all the tools to succeed, Bausby is making the most of this opportunity to play. When going into training camp, he’s definitely one to watch.
