Eagles mock draft tracker: Mel Kiper has the Eagles taking a tight end in his latest mock draft

28 March 2018 Eagles News

ESPN’s Mel Kiper has released his third mock draft today and he has the Eagles taking a tight end at the 32nd pick.

Kiper, has the Eagles selecting tight end Dallas Goedert out of South Dakota St., saying,

“My best comp for Goedert after watching him closely in 2017? Eagles tight end Zach Ertz. So this pick would mean the Eagles get a ready-made replacement for Trey Burton(and Brent Celek). Philadelphia showed last season that there are plenty of snaps available for multiple tight ends. Goedert is an adequate blocker who will be a threat as a pass-catcher. This is a great situation for him.”

Do the Eagles go this route with this pick?

My assumption is the Eagles go the best player available so it is possible. Goedert is a special player and looks the part for sure. With the Eagles losing two tight ends this offseason, drafting a tight end in this years’ draft looks like a good idea. However, drafting one with their first-round pick might not be the move they make.

The Eagles do like to get their tight ends involved a lot in their offense, but with Zach Ertz emerging as one of the league’s best, the Eagles do not need to draft a tight end that early in the draft. They can look at other positions and look to upgrade positions where players are aging, like at safety and linebacker. Ertz is just reaching his prime and is secured for the next couple of seasons, as Goedert is a great talent, the Eagles might need to go elsewhere with their pick.

But, thinking about the ways the Eagles can use both Ertz and Goedert is compelling, as both tight ends are both virtually uncoverable. Goedert plays like a wide receiver with the size of a tight end, much like Ertz does. It is safe to say, with Ertz and Goedert on the team, not one team in the NFL would be able to contain the Eagles tight ends.

It is likely the Eagles go the best player available with their pick and if the other players on their board are gone, Goedert might hear his name called to the defending World Champion Eagles. However, right now, it does not seem like the team will take a tight end in the first round, especially with the draft class being pretty deep.
