Eagles make the tough decision to release TE Brent Celek

13 March 2018 Eagles News

Sometimes the NFL shows you just how tough of a league it is. The statement could not be any truer than the move the Philadelphia Eagles just had to go through. The Eagles have just released their longest-tenured player Brent Celek, a move that creates $4 million in cap space.

It is a bittersweet moment for the Eagles and Celek because he still wanted to play, but the Eagles just could not afford to keep him on the roster anymore. With this move and the Eagles move to restructure Lane Johnson’s contract, they are now very close to being under the salary cap.

Salary cap aside, this is about losing a player who gave his heart and soul to everything he did while being a member of the Eagles. He was a class act and deserved the Super Bowl Championship. Here’s the full statement put out by the team.

They hit the nail in the coffin, between Celek and Brian Dawkins there are not two better athletes that embody what being a Philadelphia Eagles is. It is a difficult decision, but Celek will always be an Eagle for life, that is for sure.
