Eagles vs. Rams key matchup: The game will be decided in the trenches

9 December 2017 Eagles News

Carson Wentz and Jared Goff are stealing the headlines with just one day before the Eagles take on the Los Angeles Rams. However, this game will be decided in the trenches.

The Rams have a very good defensive line, consisting of All-Pro Aaron Donald, Michael Brockers, Ethan Westbrooks, Tyrunn Walker, Tanzel Smart. They have been able to generate a lot of pressure on the quarterbacking, sacking opposing quarterbacks 38 times. However, against the run, they have struggled a little, ranking 26th in the league. The Rams use a 3-4 defense, which makes it easier for teams to run against.

They will be up against the Eagles offensive line which for the most part, has played at an elite level all season. Going up against a 3-4 defense, they will be up against a lot of blitzing, primarily with the Rams outside linebackers. Last game versus the Seattle Seahawks was really the first time we saw the Eagles offensive line struggle. The Eagles left the side of the line consisting of Halapoulivaati Vaitai and Stefen Wisniewski will be under pressure for the most of the game, just like in Seattle.

The Eagles defensive line has been fearsome, but for them, a matchup against the Rams will be a grudge match. After adding John Sullivan and Andrew Whitworth, the Rams offensive line has been rebirthed. They are making things really easy for Goff and running back Todd Gurley. But, the Eagles defensive line is one of the league’s best, including the league’s best run defense. If the Rams cannot get Gurley going against the Eagles, pressuring Goff will be a lot easier.

As you can see, this game is going to come down to whoever can generate the most pressure and whoever can deal with the pressure. The battle of the trenches is going to be a vital matchup in this game. Whoever wins this battle will surely win this game.
