Dare I say it: Zach Ertz is the best TE in the league

24 October 2017 Eagles News

After what seems like years of waiting, it finally happened.

Eagles tight end Zach Ertz is in the midst of a really special year. Through seven games, Ertz has solidified himself as the best tight end in the league this season. Ertz leads all tight ends in receptions, yards, and touchdowns. Ertz has an amazing 39 receptions for 494 yards and five touchdowns and already this season, Ertz has set a career high in touchdowns.

The biggest thing with Ertz this season is consistency. He has only had one game this season where he caught less than five passes and in the one game, he caught two touchdowns. He is also averaging around 70 yards a game. He is making big plays for the Eagles offense in the red zone and on third down. In both scenarios, he is Carson Wentz’s go-to guy. Speaking with Ertz, he was always excited to be able to have a full offseason with the same quarterback. It seems to have that full offseason was in fact very important because, in year two, Ertz has already built a great relationship with Wentz. They are on the same page at all times and are forming a formidable duo.

While the Eagles offseason additions help open up the middle of the field for Ertz, his success is mainly down to his ability. It is simple, he is a mismatch on any linebacker and safeties are too small to cover him. Ertz is a great route runner and last night’s performance was a perfect testament to that. The Washington Redskins were trying to cover Ertz with safety D.J. Swearinger, however, Ertz was too much for him. Ert beat him for a touchdown and slashed him for a couple big gains. Also, Ertz has great body control for a player of his size. He is extremely athletic, which makes it extremely difficult to cover. He does all the hard work perfectly and Wentz rewards him with a dime of a pass.

Seven games in, it has gotten to that point, Ertz is the best tight end in the league right now. Week after week, Ertz is performing for this Eagles offense. It should come as no surprise that Ertz leads every tight end in all the major statistical categories.
