Due to a neck injury, the Eagles were stuck with Ryan Mathews because he was not medically cleared, therefore they could not trade or release him. But, today Mathews was officially cleared to practice which meant he would also be released too.
We all knew the Eagles intentions all along. The signing of LeGarrette Blount was the icing on the cake for him, after that, his future with the Eagles was over.
In his short stint with the Eagles, one that began with him immediately being replaced by DeMarco Murray right after he signed, Mathews ended up having a decent stint here.
He racked up 1,200 yards and 14 touchdowns in two seasons with the team. In various games, he played a massive role and he scored numerous important touchdowns. But, the biggest summary of his stint in Philly is his injuries, he missed a lot of time injured.
Mathews demise will always be his injuries. This move to release Mathews will save the Eagles $4 million in cap space. And on this team, the $4 million in cap space will be very crucial going forward.
