DC Jim Schwartz looking for “consistency” from CB group

3 August 2017 Eagles News

During Wednesday’s press conference with Defensive Coordinator Jim Schwartz, he noted that the cornerback group “not only need playmakers”, but they needed “consistency.”

Media members were highly interested in Schwartz’s take on the cornerbacks as the first three questions of the day were solely focused on the cornerback position.

“We’re sort of the same way as you guys. We’re very interested in the cornerback competition,” Schwartz said. “It’s a daily thing for those guys. We not only need playmakers, but we need consistency.”

When you think about the group as a whole, consistency may be the number one thing that is lacking from this young group. When one of your most seasoned players in Patrick Robinson is having a rough go of it, things may be headed for a change.

Second-year player, Jalen Mills, has got to be the closest thing to a consistent play maker for Schwartz’s defense. The problem is finding a second corner to be a servicable playmaker opposite Jalen Mills.

By default, rookie corner, Rasul Douglas, may have to learn how to be that guy on the fly for the Eagles defense this season. The Eagles do have depth players that have flashed in camp, with CJ Smith and Aaron Grymes also competing for quality reps. However, if Philadelphia plays it smart, they’ll do their best to acquire a CB through a trade or wait till team cuts start happening around the league. Movign forward, finding another corner has got to be priority number one for Howie Roseman.
