Eagles acquire LB Duke Riley

30 September 2019 DRAFT

According to Philadelphia Eagles Twitter, the Eagles have acquired LB Duke Riley and a 2020 6th-round pick from Atlanta, in exchange for S Johnathan Cyprien and a 2020 7th-round pick.

Riley was a 3rd pick (no. 75) out of LSU in the 2017 draft. He was drafted by the Atlanta Falcons where he has spent his first three seasons. He has compiled 90 tackles in his 32 career games, 16 in which he started.

Bradham and Brown have been starting with Gerry filling in at times. Kamu is set to have his reps increase and take back his role but I doubt we want to see him out there for special teams. The addition of Riley gives us a special teams player, as well as depth at the LB position. The question has never been about talent for Duke but rather if he has the football IQ to put it all together.

In 4 weeks, Jonathan Cyprien was used on only 15 snaps, 12 defensively. He saw his most usage last week but in the end, the coaching staff saw all they needed to see. The move will come as a surprise to some as our secondary is depleted but Cyprien is far from the hybrid S/CB that Malcolm Jenkins is. He is more of a LB/S and apparently his style just didn’t fit Jim’s scheme. We have four safeties on the roster (Jenkins, McLeod, Sendejo, Ford) and now six linebackers (Bradham, Grugier-Hill, Brown, Edwards, Gerry, Riley).

The Eagles will also receive the Falcons 6th rd. pick in exchange for their 7th rd. pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.
